What is an Advanced Directive for Healthcare?

Fact: An ADHC can provide clarity to your loved ones. 

  • A well drafted ADHC can contain information regarding your healthcare preferences in a variety of situations, such as if you have a terminal condition or have a form of dementia. 

  • Letting your loved ones know your treatment preferences saves them from potential anguish resulting from having to make these decisions for you without guidance.  ​
     

Fact: An ADHC establishes who has the first priority for disposing of your remains. 

  • The individual to whom you designate the ability to make medical decisions upon your behalf in your ADHC has the first priority when it comes to the disposing of your remains. 

Fact: An ADHC establishes who can make critical healthcare decisions for you. 

  • The individual to whom you designate as your "agent" in your ADHC will have the authority to make decisions for you in the event you are unable to.

    • This can include make decisions regarding the medical treatment you receive, the procedure you undergo, and even any measures taken to comfort you.
